Ayurveda

Q: What do you mean by holistic science?

A: Ayurveda looks at an individual not merely as a body but as a being with all the components (mind, body, consciousness) together. The perspective is always as a whole and not as solitary bits of a person.
This school of thought aids in decoding the imbalances to a single root cause and assists in restoring balance as a whole, treating not just the body but also the mind and consciousness.

Q: Why do you have no mention of herbs anywhere? Isn't Ayurveda herbs?

A: Herbs are only a part of Ayurveda. Herbs are used to restore balance in an individual as an adjunct to lifestyle and diet changes.

Ayurveda says - 'When a person follows the right diet, there's no use of medicines;
When a person doesn't follow the right diet, there's no use of medicines.'

This is why there is importance attached primarily to diet (and lifestyle) throughout this website.

Panchakarma

Q: What is Panchakarma? Is it spa?

A: Pancha means five and karma means therapy. Panchakarma is a group of therapies administered to a person when there is a major toxic accumulation in the body and the toxins need to be eliminated via one of the channels in the body. These eliminations are done in one of the five ways (medicated emesis, medicated purgation, medicated enemas, medicated errhines and blood letting) based on the need and circumstance. It is a complex procedure and should be administered only after a detailed examination of an individual. Only a qualified therapist can administer these procedures on prescription by a qualified Ayurveda practitioner.
So, no Panchakarma is not a spa. :)

Panchakarma

Q: Can panchakarma be taken by anyone at anytime?

A: No, Panchakrma cannot be taken by anyone. An Ayurvedic physician needs to assess the person and panchakarma is prescribed when the body needs it and only if the body has the strength to undergo the therapy. Panchakarma therapies need to be done at a particular hour during the day and the performance of these therapies also depend on the climatic conditions and seasons.

Generally, weak, frail, old people, children, pregnant women and lactating women are contraindicated for panchakarma.

Q: Does Ayurvedic Treatment take time?

A: The treatment length depends on how soon it has been initiated since the onset of an ailment in an individual. If it's a short duration since the onset of a disease, the treatment time is short. Similarly, if it has been years since the onset of a particular condition, you do need to give it some time for the treatment.

Q: I'm skeptical of using herbs as treatment. Does Ayurveda have anything else to offer?

A: Herbs are always prescribed after careful analysis of an individual. These herbs are customised according to one's needs.

If you are still concerned about the use of herbs, you can choose to follow everything else that Ayurveda prescribes including but not limited to a customised diet and lifestyle.

Q: Are my previous medical records of relevance in Ayurveda? Do I need to bring them when visiting you?

A: Your medical reports are a form of peeking into some elements of your body in the past. As the language that Ayurveda speaks is different from the one that conventional medicine speaks, all your previous records would aid in the understanding of your body from a different perspective.
